The 10 day countdown to Christmas is on. This past Sunday we went out for our tree.

It's still my favorite spot & the snow started coming down thickly right on cue.

The tree is now all decorated & looks wonderful.

Things have been hectic as ever. We survived a weeks-long oil tank debacle and now we're back in action & all filled up.
School keeps us busy as can be. Odessa is into the Swiss Family Robinson right now. Max is flying through his math work. Horatio loves to color & is getting good at saying letters with me. Oh, and he's very proud of his bathroom skills!
Maybe I'll get my act together & do a retrospective of pictures from the last 6 months.

The kids have been gung-ho to start doing experiments with Dessa's physics kit and being (another) rainy day with some long attention spans we jumped in.
I thought we had some summer vacation left (40 days to be exact) but I push the writing & math practice & they push the science.

The school year has been done for a couple of weeks now. Dessa had her first portfolio evaluation on June 2nd . It felt like another big milestone to me. We've all learned so much this year. I get pretty emotional when I dwell on how lucky we are to be able to do this together. Should I admit they asked if we could do some history this morning? We did.

We've been busy in the yard, had a field trip to America's Stonehenge, a cookout with friends at the dam, plus just trying to keep up with the house & these guys.

The bloom is starting to roll in.

Scientific Achievement

Today was our first Science Fair. It was a lot of fun. The kids have worked hard & learned a lot about weather over the last couple weeks. They have been out collecting weather data every day (that also involved a lot of sledding) & Dessa filled out a weather report each day. They built a wind vane and an anemometer. We read about weather and clouds. Max especially enjoyed cutting out felt clouds and raindrops & drawing his weather picture with chalk. They did a great job on the display & set it up beautifully. They both answered questions about the devices & how they work. They also had a good time seeing some of their friends & meeting other kids. They each (all 3) got a certificate for participating.
I am so proud of them!

The funniest thing - tonight we have the first strong wind since building the anemometer. We may have to take it outside again tomorrow.

Surface Tension and Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation has its perks. Earlier this week Race was wide awake at midnight wanting to play. Not to be a party-pooper, I turned on the light & watched while he mastered waving. Slowly and intently he bent his fingers, first away then towards his face, silently studying the movements all the while.

Today's science topic was surface tension. There are lots of fun things to try that demonstrate the principle. Food coloring always adds to an experiment.

Max's handwriting is getting good. Yes, the photo is upside down. And yes, he chose to document that aspect of the experiment.

Last night this boy talked in his sleep. Do you know what he said?
"Mmah, mma ma." Then he was quiet again. Really.

It's getting cold now & I'm dreading the winter weather. School is keeping me hopping. Letting the kids set their pace has me a little out of breath. I try to keep up. The housework has definitely been getting bumped to the end of the things to do list a lot lately. Race is getting me up a lot at night still, so staying up a little later hasn't been an option. Most nights we we're in bed before 10. Closer to 9.

Yesterday I got enough REM sleep to have a dream about the daisies coming up three times bigger than last year. Already?

This week we made the butter tub paddle-wheel boat. We read about:
~ Galileo and potential energy (dropping a rock on the kitchen floor)
~ Joule and the conservation of energy (chanting "Energy cannot be created or destroyed...")
~ Steam engines. I love pouring over the photos with all the parts labeled with descriptions of their functions.

We also played with rubber bands to see how they store energy. Making a rubber band ball is harder than you might think.

Our butter tub was less than perfect for the task. I'm guessing that rounded corners made the size of the paddle too small.

Wow, I can't believe I got this done! I need to give credit where it's due, The big kids helped a lot & a well timed nap on the part of the little one made the whole thing possible. We also put 4 wheelbarrow loads of compost into the garden & made room for fall leaves. Now, I'm really hoping to get out & rake a little. ...right after we read about octopus.

It was a lovely day, sunny & it didn't get cold until we were about ready to go home. I have 1/2 a bushel of apples to put to use. The apple crisp was really good, though I caught the kids eating just the crisp & leaving the apples.....
Race & I had it easy in the corn maze because the bigger kids ran ahead to lead the way. They also went back for a 2nd trip (at a full run) after the apple picking.

I've pondered this since I read it. The first comes easily, but what else ranks in that top 2-5?

1. Ambition. Ambition to try things without being afraid. To pursue the big dreams as well as the little things. Ambition to master something, follow what calls them, create what they envision.

2. Observation. Remember to watch and think. Use the information that is all around us. Make connections. Understand a deeper thread throughout existance.

3. Philosophy. Develop a personal moral code that jibes with their hearts as well as the world around them - and the hard part - living by it.

4. Joy. Finding the things that give it all meaning. The things that (to quote a friend) make the stars shine a little brighter & the air smell a little sweeter.

5. For number five I'll throw in academics. That is why we need school, right? ;)

Canvas tennis shoes. I wear them around the yard when I'm not barefoot, which usually means hardcoreyardwork. Anything that might involve thorns or dirt or wet or a shovel.
They see all manner of foulness.
Usually I leave them on the porch. Earlier today I stepped in something bad - so I threw them out next to the step so I could clean them off later. When I went out to toss some stuff in the beloved compost pile I put them back on - I set off - then I stopped & removed the right shoe.

Poor slug didn't make it. Max checked for me.

is back! It's been rainy for more than a week and though there were some stretches of sun you knew another thunderstorm could be on the way at any moment.
I was so excited to see that 'it's going to be a beautiful day' sun that I had to take a picture first thing this morning. I really wanted to catch that sunlit baby.

38 weeks and counting

We are getting down to it. I am really hoping not to have to wait the whole remaining two weeks.
I don't remember being this impatient with the other kids.
The last 2 Dr. apts. have had pretty good news on progress toward labor. I go back on Friday.
Paul has finished the drywall in Dessa's new room & started looking into the automotive projects. I'm trying not to worry about how long that could take.
I'm just keeping up w/ school & the minimum of housework. Not a ton of energy, here.

The yard is slowly drying up & most of the snow is gone. I would love to be out there working - but the town is flushing water pipes & there's no way I'm letting the kids within 10 feet of that puddle when they can't get showered or hosed down.

This one was fun. Floating flowers to demonstrate how the fibers in paper absorb water & expand which causes them to unfold. We also tucked in the concept of water soluble glue.

30 Weeks

Here's the belly. I will have to get Paul to get a better picture - I'm not going to be happy w/ anything taken in the bathroom.
I had an OB. appointment on Wednesday last week. The Dr. told me how great I was doing & said I'm the Obstetrician's dream patient. Heartbeat was at 145, My bp is low, total weight gain is at 29 lbs.
After the apt. we went to lunch & then to find some maternity jeans. The kids were great in the store & we walked around for almost 2 hours. Then came the drive home. By evening I was a wreck. Thursday was worse. My tummy was achy & I was having Braxton-Hicks that were worse than any I've had yet. I stayed on the couch & didn't do much of anything except the most essential stuff. Friday I was the same. Around noon I talked to Paul & we decided it was time to call the Dr. They had me come in to get checked. Did I mention the snowstorm that was going on at the time? - Yeah, that too. Paul came home to get us & off we went. Race Springs in the car that has snow tires? Yeah, that too. It was kind of fun to see the same Dr. again. Everything was as it should be, he wasn't worried about early labor & said I may just be uncomfortable for the rest of the time. Third babies do that, etc.
So, long story that is not so short, I need to do less. Yesterday I had to make another trip to civilization & I'm paying for it today - I just haven't found a way to shorten the trip when there's stuff to be done.

I can't believe we only have 10 weeks to go!

This project is a part of our History lessons. The version in The Story of the World called for using a chicken. When we first reached that chapter in the book I was experiencing a lot of morning sickness and I wasn't about to keep a chicken in my kitchen for 6 weeks to mummify it. Thankfully I knew through a friend that there was a fruit version that we could do. It has taken us quite a while to get back to this fun hands-on project but we finally started it last Monday. The kids really enjoyed it. We will get a few more pictures when King Who-Haad and Queen Sally Aurora are fully entombed.

When it starts to get close to spring I start reading Garden Web again. Today there was a great thread of people's letters to their gardens. I've been hearing this list in my head for almost a month...

Dear Garden,
1. I miss you!
2. I promise to get your soil tested in the spring - as in,
before I plant.
3. I've vowed all winter to not start seedlings too early, I'll try to stick to that. Really.
4. Somehow, I'll get you planted in spite of giving birth in the vicinity of May 6th. (Hey, I did it 4 years ago.)
5. I promise to share the compost w/ you & not give it all to the flowers up front since I can't/won't buy them mulch.
6. I can't wait for the melt!

It's no secret that I think my husband is pretty incredible, but there are times when he really, really blows me away.
The framing is done & we got past the rough heat bills to order the first load of drywall. It was delivered on Saturday & put in the garage. Paul had been thinking about how to get it up the rather tight stairway. Once it was here, he got to work on his plan.
A couple long 2 X 4's to act as a ramp.

Some rotating stops to act as a shelf, but to tip out of the way when sliding a sheet of drywall up.

The ramp pieces pivot as needed to get the 4 X 8 sheet turned in a 9 X 4' space.

From there the sheet stands on the 'easel' while he goes up the stairs behind it.

And from the hallway upstairs he lifts the piece & puts it in the first room to get walls.

I think he's amazing. I also have to say, this guy takes the words 'do it yourself' pretty seriously.

Baby Report

I had an ob apt. yesterday. It was off to a rough start with freezing rain & getting stuck in the driveway at 9am, but a kind guy w/ a plow truck pulled me out & off we went.
The visit started off with the glucose test sugar drink. I think I may be the only person who doesn't mind that stuff.
The Dr. said I'm measuring right on schedule & was joking w/ me, asking when I'm going to start showing. I think that's funny considering how much I've gained so far = 27 lbs. They called back today to tell me sugar was fine but I need to take iron.
I took the kids to the mall afterward - they really don't get out to civilization often enough!
I also had a dental appointment on Monday to fix the molar that lost a filling 2 weeks ago. Another long day for me. Today is the rest/catch up day - but I'm not feeling rested yet. At least I can do the pre-snowstorm grocery run solo this evening.

We have so much to do to get the upstairs done. We really need the space to be finished by May (or earlier?)when baby arrives. I'm really starting to feel the crush of time. Today I made a little progress by taking down wall dimensions so that we can figure the cost of the drywall & interior insulation.
There are a number of other items on the 'need-to-do' list, also. Time to take a deep breath & just dig in to something...

The gift of mystery

This was a Christmas gift from my brother. He didn't know what the bulb should produce. I'm anxious to find out. I'm also crossing my fingers that it will live. It's had a fairly rough journey thus far - too little water, then too much. I think now it's in fairly ideal location w/ the proper amount of liquid. We'll have to wait & see.

Baby update

I had a Dr. appointment this morning. Baby was wiggling away for most of the drive to the Dr. office. Everything sounds good.
I've gained 20# so far.
Blood pressure is good.
Baby's heart rate was 145-150.
We are 22w 6d today (which puts us 8 days from the date of viability!) I'm so excited for spring! I might even (finally!) do some baby shopping soon.....

After more than a year of procrastination I am attempting to bake bread. I tried once, years ago. The result was rock hard- not very pretty. This time I had willing helpers. Two of them, eager to stand beside me on a single chair & teeter back & forth giving me one more thing to worry about while reading Betty's recipe for the 3rd time.
At the moment my loaves are rising & soon I'll put them in the oven & hope for the best. I'm so excited it's just silly!
My grandma bakes wonderful bread. I would love to be able to even come close to that taste.

This is a picture from the ultrasound on Monday. I'm pleased to say that everything looks good! I've been terribly remiss in keeping track of all the little facts, milestones & kidney stones but things are moving right along. Paul & the kids have all felt the baby move - so exciting! Progress on names is very slow. As is progress on the upstairs, but I don't think we need to think about that until after the holidays. I need to get to the post office (if I can get the car out of the driveway!) & make some goodies for the Christmas party tomorrow.

Putting the yard to bed

Today was remarkable in the co-incidence of a warmish day & me feeling well enough to get things done.
After the grocery & lunch it was finally time to go outside. I got a bunch of stuff done, like digging up the gladiola bulbs, planting the rooted climbing rose cuttings that have been on the porch all summer & fall, collecting the seeds from the giant tom thumb impatiens, carting away the pile of pine needles I raked up a month ago, putting all the potted plants and the trough in on the porch, and most importantly pulling up the few remaining plants & turning over the garden soil & adding some more lime. I am so excited to have gotten all of this done. I feel like I haven't done anything in the yard since the start of August. It felt good to be out there. The kids also had a great time - they harvested worms from the turned soil. Max dug a really deep hole for them to live in. Dessa took a great picture of me.

Things seem so busy when I'm under the weather. The kids had a good time trick or treating - all the way around the block! We had a last hurrah of candy after lunch today, then I put the remainder in a bowl (wonder who'll eat that?) so I could put the pumpkin buckets & the rest of the Halloween stuff away.

We had our annual trip to watch the trebuchet throw pumpkins. It was as fun as ever & the throws were creeping up over 2,000 feet. Sounds like Yankee Siege will get the world record in Delaware again.
We had everyone over here for food afterwards. The pork was pulled this year (we discovered the merits of pork shoulder!) Potato salad, carrot soup, cider, & those wonderful chocolate chip cookies. Now I'm hungry all over again!

I've been quiet for a while. Because I'm pregnant. I've been finding it pretty hard to keep up w/ the general news & latest events when theres a big item being ignored. Now that the majority of the people that I want to tell in person know I suppose I can post it here (especially since nobody knows this blog exists!)

Today is 12w 1d. The above picture is from 8w. My next Dr. visit is Nov. 7th. I've been feeling sick off & on - currently on for the last 4 days. ugh. We are very excited but just getting through the week has been tough enough that I don't have a lot to say. So, back to my couch.
